The plateau, band by band
Every 700 metres the mountain changes its mind — the plants, the light, the palette all shift. Move through the four bands below; the page climbs with you.
Band 01
≈ 900 m
The road ends where the tea terraces begin. Morning fog pools in the valley and burns off by ten; the air smells of wet leaf and woodsmoke. This is the softest walking on the mountain — good for a first afternoon.
Band 02
≈ 1600 m
Above the tea line the forest closes in and the fog stops lifting. Spruce and beech drip all day; moss climbs everything that holds still. Guides read the trail by sound as much as sight. Bring a layer — it is ten degrees cooler here.
Band 03
≈ 2300 m
The trees give out and the world opens. For six weeks in early summer the meadow turns to colour — gentians, primulas, an endemic bellflower found on no other range. This is the band our botany walks are built around.
Band 04
≈ 3000 m
On clear dawns the ridge stands above the weather: a white sea of cloud fills every valley below and only the far peaks break the surface. It is a guided, weather-dependent climb — and the reason many guests come back.
The lodge
Fourteen rooms in local spruce, built low so the fog moves over rather than around us. No televisions. Full-height windows on the valley side, and a shared hearth room where the day is planned over tea.

Guided trails
Every walk leaves with a licensed mountain guide and a weather call made that morning. Difficulty is graded to European hiking norms — no route is longer or higher than it says here.
Highland kitchen
The kitchen runs on what the plateau gives: mountain butter and aged cheeses from the summer pastures, wild greens picked that morning, cornbread, honey from hives two ridges over. Dinner is one shared sitting, announced when the fog closes in.
In guests' words
“We came for one night and rebooked for three. Waking above the cloud is not a photograph you can fake.”
“The botany walk was the most quietly expert guiding we've had anywhere in Europe.”
“No screens, no signal, one shared dinner. Exactly the disconnection we needed.”
Before you book
Rarely. Fog usually sits in the valleys and lifts through the morning, so the higher trails are often clear while the lodge is still wrapped in cloud. Every walk gets a weather call at breakfast, and guides reroute rather than cancel wherever it is safe. The summit climb is the one exception — it only runs on settled dawns.
The tea terrace loop suits anyone comfortable on their feet for a couple of hours. Moderate routes assume regular walking and a head for uneven ground. The summit ridge is strenuous — a long day with real ascent — and we ask for prior hill experience. Grades follow European hiking norms and are never overstated.
The nearest airport is roughly a three-hour drive. We arrange a shared transfer from the valley town on set arrival days; the final stretch is unpaved mountain road, so private cars are best left below and collected on the way out. Full directions and transfer times come with your confirmation.
The alpine meadow peaks for about six weeks from early summer, though exact timing shifts with snowmelt each year. The botany walk runs through this window; ask us for the current forecast when you enquire and we'll tell you honestly how far along the bloom is.
Reservations can be changed or cancelled free of charge up to 14 days before arrival. Inside 14 days we hold the first night; inside 72 hours the full stay is charged. If we cancel a guided walk for weather, that walk is refunded in full — your room is never affected.
There is a single satellite line at reception for essentials, and that is deliberately all. Rooms and trails have no signal. Most guests find this is the point; if you need to stay reachable, tell us before you arrive and we'll help you plan around it.
